In its day-fighter versions, the MiG-17 packed a punch with a nose armament of one 37mm (1.45in) N-37D cannon to starboard, and single 23mm (0.9in) NS-23 cannon on the port side.

MiG-17 Warbirds

The MiG-17’s high-subsonic performance, robust construction and the relative availability of both complete aircraft and spare parts have made it a popular performer on the warbird scene. In the U.S. alone there are around 27 privately owned MiG-17s, many of these originating from Polish production, where locally built variants of the ‘Fresco’ remained in service until the early 1990s. This particular ex-Polish Air Force example, fitted with underwing smoke generators for airshow performances, was flown by the late Bill Reesman, a former U.S. Air Force and Air Guard pilot who flew 320 combat missions over Vietnam in the F-100 Super Sabre. The jet is now operated by Red Bull.
